Washington Commanders sign veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to one-year contract

Summary

The Commanders added Stefon Diggs on a one-year, $12 million deal to bolster their receiving corps after injuries left them without a reliable No. 2 option last season.

Washington announced a one-year contract worth $12 million with veteran wideout Stefan Diggs, according to a league source who requested anonymity. The signing gives the Commanders a proven playmaker to pair with Terry McLaurin and addresses a need for depth that was exposed by injuries to the receiving unit last season.

Diggs, 32, returns to the Washington, D.C., area where he was born and played high school and college football. He previously posted 85 receptions for 1,013 yards with the New England Patriots after recovering from an ACL tear suffered while with the Houston Texans. Over his career, Diggs has recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards in seven seasons and earned four Pro Bowl selections.

The team had considered other options, including Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers, but Aiyuk remained under contract and his pursuit waned after public criticism of his former club. The Commanders also evaluated Deebo Samuel, who ultimately re-signed with the 49ers.

Diggs’ recent legal history includes a May 2026 acquittal of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault charges in Massachusetts, after which the NFL concluded there was insufficient evidence for disciplinary action. He also faces two pending civil lawsuits involving defamation claims, which he has denied.

"We believe Diggs can contribute immediately and help us compete at a high level," a Commanders spokesperson said.

The addition marks the latest move by Washington to improve its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
