LIV Golf Announces New Lead Investor to Fund 2027 Season

Summary

LIV Golf has secured an undisclosed lead investor to finance its 2027 season after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew its multibillion-dollar support.

LIV Golf said it has reached a signed agreement with an unnamed lead investor, which has been approved by the league's board and is expected to close in September. The new financing will allow the competition to continue into the 2027 season and beyond, the organization added in a press release.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund announced in April that it would end its multibillion-dollar backing of the tour at the close of the current season, raising questions about the league's future. The fund had contributed more than $5 billion since LIV Golf launched in 2022.

Chief executive Scott O'Neil said the deal will make players majority equity holders in the league, describing it as "a first for a major global sports league." He also noted interest from over a dozen potential minority investors, suggesting a multi-partner model aimed at long-term stability.

The schedule will be trimmed to ten events next season, split evenly between the United States and other international venues. The 2026 calendar had originally planned 14 events, but a June tournament in New Orleans was postponed amid uncertainty and has not been rescheduled.

O'Neil said the league remains focused on delivering a strong finish to the 2026 season, highlighting the upcoming New York event at Bedminster. Major winners such as Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia continue to compete for LIV Golf, while former PGA Tour members Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have returned to the PGA Tour.

In July, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour formed an alliance with the Asian Tour, further challenging LIV Golf's position in professional golf.
