Democratic incumbent Shri Thanedar defeated by progressive challenger Donavan McKinney in Michigan primary
State Rep. Donavan McKinney won the Democratic primary for Michigan's Detroit-area congressional seat, unseating incumbent Shri Thanedar amid a campaign focused on progressive policies.
State Rep. Donavan McKinney secured the Democratic nomination for Michigan's 13th congressional district, defeating incumbent Shri Thanedar, according to projected primary results. McKinney, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, campaigned on a platform that includes Medicare for All, stricter limits on U.S. military aid to Israel, and large-scale investments in clean energy and affordable housing.
Thanedar, who won the seat in 2022 after largely self-funding his campaign, faced criticism over his departure from the Democratic Socialists of America, his stance on Israel, and the financial performance of his campaign, which reported a loss of more than $2 million tied to cryptocurrency investments and the use of taxpayer funds for television ads resembling campaign spots.
The primary race attracted support for McKinney from prominent progressive figures, including Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, as well as organizations such as Justice Democrats and Leaders We Deserve. Thanedar had previously received endorsements from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior House Democrats.
Analysts noted that the outcome reflects broader voter frustration with establishment candidates and a coordinated effort by progressive groups to challenge incumbents across the state.
