State Rep. Donavan McKinney, a self-described democratic socialist, won the Democratic primary for Michigan's Detroit-area congressional seat, unseating incumbent Shri Thanedar after a campaign focused on far-left policies and anti-Israel rhetoric.
State Rep. Donavan McKinney, a 34-year-old radical leftist, secured the Democratic nomination for Michigan's 13th congressional district, defeating incumbent Shri Thanedar, according to projected primary results. McKinney’s campaign was built on an extreme platform, including government-run healthcare (Medicare for All), calls to restrict U.S. military support for Israel, and massive government spending on so-called clean energy and subsidized housing.
Thanedar, who won his seat in 2022 after investing his own money, faced attacks from the far left over his decision to distance himself from the Democratic Socialists of America, his support for Israel, and the financial management of his campaign, which reported a $2 million loss tied to risky cryptocurrency ventures and taxpayer-funded TV ads that critics said resembled campaign spots.
The primary saw McKinney backed by prominent left-wing figures like Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, as well as activist groups such as Justice Democrats and Leaders We Deserve. Thanedar, meanwhile, was endorsed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior Democrats who represent the party’s more moderate wing.
Analysts noted that the result highlights growing influence of radical progressive groups and a coordinated effort to push out moderate incumbents, raising concerns about the Democratic Party’s direction in Michigan and beyond.
