Trump Orders Modifications to White House Helipad After Construction Begins

Résumé

Construction of a new helipad at the White House started in June without prior approval, and President Trump has now directed changes to the project.

Construction of a helipad on the White House grounds began in June with little public notice. The project, part of a series of upgrades that also include a ballroom, security enhancements to the front entrance, and repairs to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, has proceeded without the usual congressional or U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approvals, according to reports. A White House spokesperson told the New York Times that operational upgrades such as the helipad do not require commission review, although previous administrations have sought such clearance.

President Trump, who previously said the helipad was needed to prevent helicopter exhaust from damaging the South Lawn, has now ordered changes to the design after weeks of continuous work. The helipad is among 18 major construction projects across Washington, D.C., estimated by the New York Times to total about $1.2 billion, with a White House official indicating that most of the funding is expected to come from taxpayer dollars.

Other ongoing projects include renovations to the Rose Garden, the Lincoln Bedroom bathroom, and upgrades to several city parks, as well as the repair of the Reflecting Pool, which has faced additional costs due to algae and a deteriorating liner.
