Lions wide receiver Dominic Lovett shines in camp as roster spot opens
Second-year receiver Dominic Lovett impressed coaches during Day 6 of Detroit Lions training camp, capitalizing on an injury to rookie Kendrick Law to vie for a roster position.
Detroit Lions coaches noted significant progress from second-year wide receiver Dominic Lovett during the sixth day of training camp. After missing most of last season due to a preseason injury, Lovett has taken advantage of a season-ending injury to rookie receiver Kendrick Law, positioning himself for the team's No. 5 receiver slot. He performed well in one-on-one drills, team drills and special-teams work, including a long catch from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and a notable route against cornerback Roger McCreary.
"Consistency, knowing more in depth about the playbook, and really, just trying to fine-tune some details, whether it be routes or blocking," Lovett said when asked about his development.
The running back competition also drew attention as the Lions continue without Jahmyr Gibbs. Backups Jacob Saylors, Jabari Small, Kye Robichaux and Isiah Pacheco each posted 10-plus-yard runs in practice, prompting head coach Dan Campbell to say the group will receive a thorough evaluation.
Other position battles were highlighted, with cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. acknowledging a slip against wide receiver Jameson Williams and emphasizing the learning value of such matchups. Free-agent wide receiver Greg Dortch displayed strong one-on-one performance, while left guard Christian Mahogany remained the primary starter on the line.
Quarterback Jared Goff showed a mix of misfires and accurate throws, including a 25-yard completion to Jameson Williams. Defensive linemen Tyler Lacy and Alim McNeill each recorded tackles for loss, and kicker Jake Bates was perfect on eight attempts ranging from 39 to 59 yards.
Overall, the Lions’ first-team offense performed well in situational drills, while the defense produced a key stop in a late-game scenario, highlighting the competitive depth emerging across the roster.
