Lions say Bijan Robinson extension may ease Jahmyr Gibbs contract talks
The Detroit Lions indicated that Bijan Robinson's new three-year deal could help accelerate negotiations on a contract for running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Atlanta announced that running back Bijan Robinson agreed to a three-year extension averaging $22.25 million per year, with $51 million guaranteed, a deal that could reset the market for the position. The Detroit Lions, whose own rookie Jahmyr Gibbs has yet to sign a new contract, were asked whether Robinson's extension might speed up Gibbs' negotiations.
"I think it certainly’s not going to hurt," Lions coach Dan Campbell said at the team's training-camp press conference. "It’s not going to hurt, but we’ll see. I’m anxious to get Gibbs back out there. Every day that goes by, that’s another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part. But, there again, it’ll get done when it gets done." Gibbs, who was drafted 12th overall in the same class as Robinson, told reporters after practice that "time will tell" regarding his deal. While no concrete timeline has been reported, some NFL insiders believe a contract could be finalized within the next few weeks.
