President Trump Nominates E.J. Antoni to Lead Bureau of Labor Statistics

President Donald Trump has nominated E.J. Antoni, chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, to serve as the next commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This nomination follows the recent dismissal of Erika McEntarfer, whom Trump accused—without evidence—of manipulating employment data after a weaker-than-expected July jobs report.
Antoni, a vocal critic of the BLS under the previous administration, has questioned the agency's data collection and reporting methods. In a recent post, he stated, "There are better ways to collect, process, and disseminate data—that is the task for the next BLS commissioner."
The nomination has elicited mixed reactions. Jason Furman, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, commented, "E.J. Antoni is completely unqualified to be BLS Commissioner. He is an extreme partisan and does not have any relevant expertise." Conversely, Stephen Moore, an economist at the Heritage Foundation, expressed support, stating, "EJ will be outstanding. Great economist and statistician."
The BLS, a division of the Department of Labor, is responsible for producing key economic data, including employment and inflation statistics. The agency's commissioner is the sole political appointee among its staff, with the position requiring Senate confirmation.
Antoni's nomination comes amid concerns about the potential politicization of the BLS, an agency traditionally known for its nonpartisan approach to economic data. The Senate will now consider his appointment, with deliberations expected to focus on his qualifications and the importance of maintaining the agency's independence.
