Tom Holland and Zendaya Drive Record Summer Box Office with Two Blockbusters
The releases of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," both starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, generated the largest domestic weekend in U.S. box-office history and pushed their combined worldwide grosses toward the billion-dollar mark.
Tom Holland and Zendaya headlined the summer box office as two of their films opened to record-breaking earnings. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" earned $355 million in North America and $927 million worldwide in its opening weekend, the second-largest global debut after "Avengers: Endgame." The film is projected to exceed $1 billion globally within its first week. At the same time, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," also featuring Holland and Zendaya, has accumulated $911 million worldwide over three weekends. Together, the two releases delivered roughly $430 million in domestic ticket sales, the highest weekend total ever recorded in the United States.
The success of "Brand New Day" came without extensive IMAX support, a factor that typically boosts opening figures for blockbuster releases. Internationally, the film performed strongly, with China contributing $121 million and other key markets such as the United Kingdom, Mexico, South Korea and India posting franchise-best openings.
Both actors have seen their annual worldwide grosses approach $2 billion, positioning them near the record set by Brie Larson in 2019. Holland’s total from the two films is about $1.8 billion, while Zendaya’s projects this year—including "The Drama," "The Odyssey," and the upcoming "Dune: Part Three"—have generated nearly $2 billion globally.
"We’re looking forward to taking a short break after these projects wrap up," Zendaya told Entertainment Tonight.
Industry analysts note that the duo’s continued presence in high-profile franchises, including the forthcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Dune: Part Three," could further elevate their box-office impact before the end of the year.
