Broadway production of "Hadestown" removes actor Geno Segers after trans-related remarks resurface

Summary

Geno Segas has been dismissed from the upcoming Broadway cast of "Hadestown" following the resurfacing of videos in which he expressed opposition to transgender women in sports and mocked pronoun usage.

The producers of the musical "Hadestown" announced that actor Geno Segas will no longer join the Broadway production at the Walter Kerr Theatre, scheduled to open on Sept. 1. The decision was described as a mutual agreement between the producers and Segas.

The move follows the online resurfacing of several videos and social-media posts in which Segas voiced opposition to transgender women participating in women’s sports and ridiculed the use of gender pronouns. After the backlash, he set his Instagram account to private and removed some videos from his YouTube channel.

Amber Iman, cast as Persephone opposite Segas’s intended role as Hades, posted on Instagram Stories that she was not silent about the issue and expressed relief at the production’s decision.

The remaining cast, including Iman as Persephone, Kayko as Orpheus, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Eurydice and Norbert Leo Butz as Hermes, will stay unchanged. "Hadestown," a Tony-winning show that debuted on Broadway in 2019 and opened in London’s West End in 2024, had slated Segas for his Broadway debut. He is previously known for playing Mufasa in the Australian production of "The Lion King" and for guest roles on television series such as "White Collar," "Teen Wolf," "Castle," "Banshee," "Elementary" and "Yellowstone."
