Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear used his X account on Monday to state that the August 3 date being discussed in relation to a possible Senate vacancy has no legal impact on his authority to call a special election. He added that the current situation, with Senator Mitch McConnell absent, actually reduces the number of votes available for Democratic-backed measures such as the SAVE Act, the administration’s approach to Iran, and potential Supreme Court nominations.
McConnell was admitted to George Washington University Hospital on June 14 after a 911 call reported a heart attack and required CPR. Since then, his office has released only two statements and photographs purported to show he is alive, which some observers have questioned as possibly AI-generated. No video or live appearance has been provided despite requests for greater transparency.
The senator’s staff declined to confirm whether a recent letter to President Donald Trump, signed by McConnell and Kentucky’s congressional delegation, was handwritten or produced by an autopen. The letter asked Trump to approve a disaster declaration for Kentucky flooding.
McConnell, who has served in the Senate since 1985, has missed numerous votes on issues ranging from Iran war powers to judicial nominations. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville urged McConnell to return before the Senate recess beginning August 7, noting the GOP’s reliance on his vote.
The prolonged absence has revived discussion of term limits for members of Congress, a topic recently highlighted by President Trump at a public event.
