Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin faces calls for his removal from prominent Trump supporters who accuse him of being too lenient on immigration.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who took over the department in March, is under pressure from several high-profile supporters of President Donald Trump who say his immigration policies are too moderate. Mullin’s remarks at the National Governors Association meeting in Oklahoma City, where he distinguished between legal and illegal immigration and suggested reforms to employment-visa programs, sparked criticism from figures such as former Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino, podcaster Jake Posobiec and former White House strategist Steve Bannon.
Bovino accused Mullin of celebrating legal immigration without acknowledging its political impact, while Posobiec said a growing segment of the movement wants a DHS secretary who prioritizes deportations. Bannon suggested that Acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte be appointed in Mullin’s place.
Other commentators, including activist Laura Loomer, called for Mullin’s dismissal, warning that any security incident could be blamed on him. The backlash follows a recent temporary pause on a DHS policy that allowed officers to stop vehicles, a move that was reversed after Trump’s intervention.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson said Mullin’s position is not in jeopardy and that the president trusts him to implement the administration’s immigration agenda. A DHS spokesperson affirmed the department’s focus on enforcing deportation policies and protecting the homeland.
