Caitlin Clark Declines to Comment on Transgender Athlete Debate After Fever Loss
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark said the issue of transgender athletes in women's sports is for leagues and governing bodies to resolve, emphasizing the team's focus on basketball.
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark addressed questions about the ongoing debate over transgender athletes competing in women’s sports after the team’s 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. Clark said the topic is not discussed in the Fever locker room and that “it’s for leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions.” She added that the team’s priority is “basketball” and improving performance on the court.
When pressed for a reaction, Clark replied, “I just answered.” She did not indicate personal agreement or disagreement with teammate Sophie Cunningham’s comments that biological males should not compete in women’s sports, nor did she comment on Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve’s “Trans kids belong” shirt.
The Fever have limited player availability for post-game media sessions during the recent road trip, with Clark absent from podium appearances after two games. The team’s public-relations staff ended a press conference early when a reporter attempted to raise the controversy.
Clark’s response was described by observers as measured and focused on avoiding a stance that could alienate either side of the debate.
