Iran Seizes Strategic Advantage Amid U.S. Hesitation
Iran appears to be gaining a strategic upper hand in regional conflicts, as U.S. military responses remain restrained amid political pressures ahead of the midterm elections.
Iran's influence in regional conflicts is reportedly growing, with experts noting that the country is leveraging its proxies to expand hostilities. Notably, Houthi rebels have threatened maritime traffic in the Red Sea, aiming to disrupt routes around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Iran has also warned neighboring Gulf states of potential retaliation should hostilities escalate, demonstrating capabilities to bypass U.S. air defenses.
Afshon Ostovar, an Iran expert, indicated that Iran and its allies perceive an opportunity to intensify the conflict, aiming to weaken the resolve of their adversaries over time. He stated, "The longer it continues, the weaker the resolve of their enemies will be."
As U.S. President Donald Trump faces declining approval ratings related to the economy and foreign policy, Tehran sees an opportunity to exploit his political vulnerability. An Iranian diplomat mentioned that the regime is prepared to consider preemptive strikes if diplomatic efforts falter. This aggressive posture was highlighted by recent unprovoked attacks on U.S. bases, described by Central Command as an attempted surprise assault.
Despite the U.S. maintaining a significant military presence in the region, stockpiles of interceptors needed to counter Iranian threats have been severely depleted, raising concerns about the security of critical energy infrastructure. Analysts warn that global energy markets are nearing critical lows, particularly if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
Dennis Citrinowicz, a former Israeli intelligence official, remarked on social media that Iran currently holds a strategic advantage in deterrence, having established a form of mutual deterrence that influences U.S. decision-making. Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has communicated with Trump to express concerns over potential U.S. military actions against Iran, urging a de-escalation of tensions.
