Curtis Mead joins Red Sox in trade, raising fantasy relevance
The Boston Red Sox acquired infielder Curtis Mead from Washington in exchange for prospect Connelly Early, a move that could enhance Mead's fantasy baseball value despite a recent wrist injury.
Boston received infielder Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals in a deal that also sent top prospect Connelly Early to Washington. The trade addresses both clubs' needs, giving the Red Sox a player with several years of team control and a skill set suited to Fenway Park. Mead, who has been playing second base, is expected to see regular playing time and could benefit from the ballpark’s dimensions, potentially improving his batting average as fly balls turn into singles and doubles off the Green Monster.
"The big winner for Fantasy is Mead, who has had a breakout season in every respect but was required to sit occasionally on account of the Nationals' infield surplus," wrote analyst Scott White.
Mead’s recent wrist fracture, suffered in his second plate appearance for Boston, is likely to sideline him for the remainder of the season, adding uncertainty to his immediate impact. Meanwhile, the Nationals acquire Early, a former top prospect dealing with elbow inflammation, which introduces some risk to his future performance.
