Broadway's Hadestown Replaces Lead Actor After Controversial Online Posts Surface

Summary

Geno Segers has been removed from the Broadway production of Hadestown following the resurfacing of past online comments that were criticized as anti-transgender, producers said.

Producers of the long-running Broadway musical Hadestown announced that Geno Segers will no longer join the cast, citing the emergence of earlier online remarks that drew criticism. The decision was described as a mutual agreement between the producers and Segers, and a new casting announcement is expected soon.

According to theater blog OnStageBlog, Segers had previously posted videos that were interpreted as opposing transgender issues and expressed disapproval of pronoun usage and of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Following the controversy, Segers made his Instagram account private and removed videos from his YouTube channel.

The producers released a statement: > "The producers of Hadestown and Geno Segers have mutually agreed that Mr. Segers will no longer join the Broadway production. Additional casting will be announced shortly." No comment was provided by Segers.

Segers, who was slated to begin performances on September 1, is known for stage roles in On the Town and The Lion King, as well as television appearances in series such as Banshee, Pair of Kings and Yellowstone.
