Northern Lights May Be Visible Across Parts of the Upper Midwest and Alaska on Sunday

Summary

NOAA forecasts a chance of aurora sightings in several northern U.S. states and interior Alaska on Sunday night, despite no expected space-weather activity.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said a faint aurora could be seen from portions of the northern United States on Sunday night. The forecast includes northern Washington, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, as well as much of North Dakota and northern South Dakota. Interior Alaska also has a higher likelihood, though the late summer sunset—around 10:35 p.m. in Anchorage—shortens the viewing window.

Viewers are advised to position themselves as close to the magnetic north pole as possible, choose a dark site with an unobstructed northern horizon, and aim for the period between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., when auroral activity typically peaks. No significant solar storms are expected, so any display would likely be modest.
