Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, joining a chorus of right-wing officials, announced a state investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci, seizing on his invocation of the Fifth Amendment during a Senate hearing. Despite a federal pardon, Murrill and other conservative leaders continue their relentless campaign to vilify a public health expert.
On Saturday, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill declared that her office would initiate a state-level investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci, following his repeated use of the Fifth Amendment during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing. Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a key figure in the fight against COVID-19, was subjected to a barrage of politically charged questions and invoked his constitutional rights 111 times to protect himself from what many see as a partisan witch hunt.
Murrill posted on X, exploiting the situation to score political points, that even though Fauci received a federal pardon from Joe Biden, he could still be targeted under Louisiana law. She further announced that Louisiana would join Alabama and Florida—both states with a track record of undermining science and public health—in investigating whether Fauci committed any offenses that could be prosecuted in state courts.
Governor Jeff Landry, a longtime critic of science-based policy, voiced his support for the investigation, referencing his previous involvement in a deposition of Fauci. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier echoed this sentiment, stating that his office is also combing through state law for potential violations. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, currently running for governor on a platform of grievance and division, insisted that a presidential pardon does not shield Fauci from state charges and threatened to pursue civil claims if elected.
