Teen Lifeguard Ryder Williams Expected to Visit White House After Rescue

Summary

Sixteen-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who saved a 10-year-old boy from a sneaker wave in California, has been invited by the White House for a visit and a civilian honor.

Sixteen-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who rescued a 10-year-old boy from a strong wave at Seabright Beach on July 25, is slated to travel to Washington, D.C., after his family was contacted by staff of the president. The rescue, captured on video and widely shared online, prompted the president to announce plans to meet the teen and present him with a civilian award for his actions.

Ryder’s father, retired firefighter Shane Williams, said the family has been in touch with White House officials but no specific date has been set. He added that the family is focusing on normal routines as Ryder prepares to start high school on Aug. 6 and resume water-polo activities.

"I would love to take my son there and I think he deserves that," Shane Williams said.

The rescue occurred when an 8-to-10-foot sneaker wave pulled the boy, Nathaniel Rai of Dallas, into deep water. Ryder and fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen swam out, retrieved the unconscious child and brought him ashore, where he was revived and is expected to recover fully. The incident was part of a busy day for Santa Cruz district lifeguards, who performed 34 rescues.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed gratitude for the rescue. The family has declined further comment on travel plans or a possible reunion with the rescued child, stating updates will come through California State Parks.
