Deebo Samuel returns to 49ers, will serve as receiver, running back and kick returner

Summary

The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed wide receiver Deebo Samuel and plan to use him at multiple positions, including receiver, running back and kickoff returner.

The San Francisco 49ers announced the return of wide receiver Deebo Samuel for a second stint with the team. General manager John Lynch said the club intends to employ Samuel in several roles during games.

"You are going to see him in the return game, at receiver, and at running back," Lynch told reporters, adding that the team will "use him all over the field."

Samuel previously expanded his role in the running game in 2021, recording 59 carries for 365 yards and eight touchdowns, alongside 1,405 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns, which earned him first-team All-Pro honors. He logged 42 carries in 2022, 37 in 2023, and 42 in 2024, and had 17 carries for 75 yards while with Washington in 2025.

His kickoff-return statistics include 17 returns for 533 yards (31.4 yards per return) in 2024 with the 49ers and 15 returns for 452 yards (30.1 yards per return) in 2025 with Washington.

The 49ers face roster gaps after losing receivers Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings and the uncertain status of Brandon Aiyuk, prompting the team to rely on Samuel’s versatility.
