Israeli Airstrike Kills Al Jazeera Journalist Anas al-Sharif in Gaza
An Israeli airstrike in Gaza City has killed Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and three colleagues, amid allegations and denials of Hamas affiliations.
An Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on August 10, 2025, resulted in the deaths of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, 28, and three of his colleagues. The strike targeted a tent near al-Shifa Hospital, where the journalists were stationed.
The Israeli military stated that al-Sharif was a Hamas cell leader responsible for organizing rocket attacks against Israeli targets. They claimed to possess documents confirming his affiliation with Hamas.
Al Jazeera and press freedom organizations have condemned the attack and the allegations. The Committee to Protect Journalists had previously expressed concern for al-Sharif's safety, citing a "campaign of incitement" against him.
Prior to his death, al-Sharif reported on intensified Israeli bombardments in Gaza City. In a social media post, he warned that if the violence continued, "Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people's voices silenced."
The deaths of al-Sharif and his colleagues have intensified concerns about the safety of journalists in conflict zones and the targeting of media personnel during military operations.
