Arizona police release ransom notes in search of abducted mother of TV journalist

Summary

Arizona authorities have made public two ransom notes linked to the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie, hoping the public can help identify the perpetrators.

Police in Arizona have released two ransom notes in an effort to locate Nancy Guthrie, who was abducted from her home near Tucson on Jan. 31 at age 84. The notes, addressed to her daughter Savannah Guthrie and the family, were sent to a local TV station shortly after the disappearance.

The first note, received on Feb. 2, demanded a Bitcoin payment of $4 million, threatening to increase the amount and kill the victim if the deadline was missed. It also referenced a white smartwatch and a damaged floodlight at the residence.

A second note arrived four days later, expressing regret and claiming the kidnappers did not intend to harm Guthrie, while stating that nothing could have changed the outcome.

Sheriff's officials said the notes display distinct linguistic patterns that could be recognized by acquaintances of the perpetrator, and urged anyone with information to come forward anonymously. A reward for tips leading to her recovery remains available.

Savannah Guthrie posted on Instagram on Feb. 7, acknowledging the messages and pleading for the safe return of her mother. She later reiterated the family's desperation and asked for public assistance in locating Nancy Guthrie.
