CBS Sports puts Tony Romo on indefinite leave after OWI arrest, JJ Watt to fill booth
CBS Sports announced that analyst Tony Romo will be on leave until further notice following his July 23 arrest for suspected operating while intoxicated, and former NFL player JJ Watt will replace him in broadcasts.
CBS Sports said former NFL quarterback and current analyst Tony Romo will be on leave for an undetermined period after his arrest in Milwaukee on July 23 on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. Police reports indicated that Romo failed a field-sobriety test and that an open container of alcohol was found in his vehicle. He told officers he was traveling to visit his grandparents. Romo was booked and released, with a court appearance scheduled for September 21. Under Wisconsin law, a first-offense OWI charge can result in a fine, a temporary driver's license suspension and, depending on blood-alcohol level, up to a year in a sobriety program.
Romo, who spent his entire 13-year playing career with the Dallas Cowboys before moving into broadcasting, has been a prominent member of CBS’s NFL coverage, often paired with lead commentator Jim Nantz. With Romo on leave, the network announced that former Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt will join Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson in the broadcast booth. CBS did not specify when, or if, Romo might return to the network.
