Disney+ cancels Marvel series "Wonder Man" after one season

Summary

Marvel's "Wonder Man" was pulled from Disney+ despite a prior renewal, ending after its eight-episode debut that logged 618 million minutes of viewing in its first week.

Disney+ has cancelled the Marvel series "Wonder Man" after a single season, reversing an earlier announcement that a second season had been ordered. The eight-episode debut, released on Jan. 27, recorded 618 million minutes of viewing in its opening week, ranking eighth among streaming originals for the period Jan. 26-Feb. 1, according to Nielsen data. The audience skewed older, with 41% of viewers aged 35-49, the highest share for any top-10 title that week.

The series, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, had been slated for a second season in March. While the show will not continue, the characters remain available for future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

Abdul-Mateen received an Emmy nomination for his performance, a distinction uncommon for live-action Marvel adaptations. "Wonder Man" originates from a 1964 comic debut in The Avengers #9, created by Stan Lee, Don Heck and Jack Kirby. The streaming drama follows an aspiring actor who, after meeting a veteran performer, learns that a famed director is remaking the titular superhero film, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry.

Variety was the first outlet to report the cancellation.
