Court dates for Chiefs coordinator Eric Bieniemy's son postponed for mental health assessment

Summary

Elijah Bieniemy's upcoming court appearances have been delayed until a mental-health evaluation is completed, while his mother remains hospitalized after a shooting at their Virginia home.

Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was arrested on Monday on charges that include malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. The charges stem from a shooting at the family’s home in Loudoun County, Virginia, on Sunday that left his mother, Mia Bieniemy, with multiple gunshot wounds; she was later released from intensive care.

The defendant is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Two court appearances originally set for Thursday and Aug. 31 have been postponed, with officials indicating they will be rescheduled after a mental-health evaluation is conducted, according to the Associated Press.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said there is no timetable for Eric Bieniemy’s return to the team.
