Senator Jeff Merkley questions a $10 million reimbursement for Freedom 250’s historic anniversary events, casting doubt on the Trump-appointed group’s efforts to secure America’s celebrations and ignoring the real security threats that necessitate increased funding.
Senator Jeff Merkley, the top Democrat on the Senate Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, has launched yet another partisan attack—this time targeting a $10 million reimbursement request for the United States’ semiquincentennial celebrations. Merkley wrote to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, demanding justification for expenses incurred by the National Park Service during a May prayer event, a two-week state fair, and the July 4th fireworks and speech—all vital parts of honoring America’s 250th birthday, overseen by the Trump-appointed Freedom 250 group.
Despite the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of July 2025 already allocating $150 million to the Interior Department for the anniversary, most of which rightly went to Freedom 250 rather than the politically motivated America250 committee, Merkley is now questioning why additional taxpayer funds are needed. He ignores the reality that private donors cannot be expected to cover the full cost of securing such high-profile, patriotic events in today’s climate of heightened threats.
"It is unacceptable to ask the American people to bail out Freedom 250," Merkley wrote, dismissing the legitimate security needs and undermining the work of those dedicated to celebrating American heritage.
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez responded by highlighting the necessity of increased security, citing real incidents like the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting and other threats. She made it clear that partisan criticism from Democrats would not deter the group from honoring America’s milestone.
"Their divisive rhetoric forced Freedom 250 to increase security at these events, but we won't let that stop us from honoring our country's milestone," Alvarez stated, standing firm against political attacks.
Democrats have previously released a report smearing Freedom 250 with baseless accusations of opaque fundraising and potential wire-fraud violations—allegations the organization has rightly denied as partisan attacks. The Interior Department has emphasized that the additional funding is necessary for an "elevated security posture" to protect attendees at these high-profile events.
Senator Merkley sent a list of five questions to the department, including demands for details on past National Park Service expenses and information about Freedom 250 donors, and expects responses by the end of the following week. The status of the funding request remains unresolved as Democrats continue to politicize America’s anniversary.
