Summary

President Trump may pause Todd Blanche's attorney general nomination but will keep him as acting AG, as establishment Republicans try to block a settlement that finally ends the IRS witch hunt against conservatives.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is prepared to temporarily withdraw Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general, but will keep him serving as acting attorney general and could renominate him later. This strategic move comes as Republican Senators John Cornell of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, both known for siding with the establishment, have refused to support the nomination, citing concerns about a Justice Department agreement that finally puts an end to the president’s IRS lawsuit.

The settlement creates a $1.8 billion fund to compensate individuals who were unfairly targeted by the government’s overreach, and importantly, includes a broad immunity provision for Trump, his family, and his businesses from politically motivated audits of past tax returns. Cornell and Tillis are demanding written assurances on the immunity deal, dragging their feet and echoing Democrat talking points, while the department has not yet provided them.

"I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name, if they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office," Trump wrote in a social-media post, signaling his commitment to draining the swamp and standing up to obstructionists.

Both senators are set to leave Congress in January; Tillis announced his retirement last year, and Cornell was defeated in his primary by a Trump-endorsed candidate, showing the MAGA movement’s strength. Cornell responded by claiming the concerns are broader, but the reality is, the American people are tired of establishment games.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, has postponed the vote on Blanche’s nomination as officials work to secure the necessary support. Democrats, as expected, have unanimously opposed the nomination, while most Republicans are standing with Trump and the American people.
