Trade Deadline Rumors: Red Sox-Mets Deal, Blue Jays Sellers, Skubal in Play

Summary

Sources say the Red Sox and Mets are exploring a trade involving Francisco Lindor and Clay Holmes, the Blue Jays are fielding offers for several players, and the Brewers and Dodgers are among the teams interested in Detroit pitcher Tarik Skubal.

The MLB trade deadline on Aug. 3, 2026, is prompting a flurry of speculation across the league. A report indicates the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets are in early talks about a blockbuster that could send shortstop Francisco Lindor and reliever Clay Holmes to Boston, though the Mets’ payroll commitments remain a hurdle.

The Toronto Blue Jays, identified as likely sellers, have been linked to several veterans, including Kevin Gausman, George Springer and Daulton Varsho. Insiders also note that the club is fielding inquiries about prospect Louis Varland, suggesting the organization may be open to a package comparable to that received for Mason Miller.

Pitcher Tarik Skubal, currently with the Detroit Tigers, is the focus of multiple trade rumors. The Milwaukee Brewers are described as aggressive suitors, while the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly more interested in Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene. Jeff Passan, citing sources, said Skubal is expected to be moved before the deadline, with the Brewers and Dodgers as the leading candidates, though Atlanta and Chicago could also enter the mix.

Earlier in the week, the Texas Rangers acquired catcher Chase Silseth and catcher-designated hitter Logan O’Hoppe from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielder Angel Arredondo.

Other notable trade chatter includes potential moves for players with no-trade clauses such as Lindor, Willson Contreras and Byron Buxton, as well as interest in high-value assets like Mike Trout, Luis Arraez and George Springer. Teams are also evaluating relievers and prospects to address specific roster needs ahead of the deadline.

"The Brewers are among the more aggressive teams trying to acquire Skubal," a source familiar with the talks said.

"The Dodgers are more focused on Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene," the same source added.

"The Blue Jays are listening to calls on Varland," another insider reported.

The trade market remains fluid, with many clubs weighing options to either bolster their playoff chances or acquire future assets.
