Apple's iPhone 18 Pro lineup expected to retain design while adding battery, display and camera upgrades

Summary

Apple is slated to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in September 2026 with modest design changes, larger batteries, LTPO+ displays, a new A20 chip and possible camera and Dynamic Island refinements.

Apple plans to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, with a second wave of lower-priced models slated for spring 2027. The new flagships are expected to keep the overall silhouette of the iPhone 17 Pro series, including the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screen sizes, while the rear camera module may appear similar but could feature a thicker housing and slightly protruding lenses. Rumors suggest the Pro Max will be marginally thicker and heavier, reflecting a larger battery that regulators have listed at roughly 5,400 mAh in the United States, up from about 5,100 mAh in the previous generation.

The front display is likely to incorporate LTPO+ technology, which offers finer control of OLED brightness and could improve power efficiency. Analysts also anticipate a smaller Dynamic Island cutout, though reports differ on whether it will be replaced entirely by an under-display Face ID system. Some leakers claim the Dynamic Island will be about 35 % narrower than on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Under the hood, the devices are expected to run on Apple’s A20 processor built on TSMC’s 2 nm process, delivering an estimated 15 % performance boost and 30 % better efficiency compared with the A19 chip. The chip may use wafer-level multi-chip module packaging that integrates RAM directly on the same wafer.

Apple is also said to be testing a variable-aperture lens for the main 48-megapixel camera, a feature that would let the aperture adjust for different lighting conditions. A new three-layer stacked sensor from Samsung is reportedly being developed for the lineup, marking a potential shift from Sony’s long-standing supply role.

Connectivity could vary by market, with U.S. models possibly retaining Qualcomm modems while international versions may use Apple’s in-house C2 modem. Additionally, Apple is reportedly preparing support for 5G satellite internet, which could debut on the iPhone 18 Pro series.

The devices will ship with iOS 27, featuring an upgraded Siri that includes conversational AI, on-screen awareness and a dedicated app for reviewing past interactions. Storage, RAM and other specifications are expected to remain similar to the iPhone 17 Pro, with 12 GB of RAM noted in multiple reports.
