U.S. conducts large-scale airstrikes on Iranian targets after missile attack on troops
The United States said it carried out a heavy wave of strikes on dozens of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps sites in response to a ballistic missile attack on U.S. forces in Jordan, while Iranian media reported civilian casualties on Qeshm Island.
The U.S. Central Command announced that a "heavy wave" of airstrikes hit dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities in Iran on Wednesday, targeting military command centers, missile and drone sites, coastal surveillance installations and maritime capabilities. The strikes were described as a "powerful response" to a ballistic missile attack on U.S. bases in Jordan earlier in the week.
Iranian state media reported that the attacks damaged locations in the south and west of the country and caused civilian deaths on Qeshm Island, including a two-year-old child. The Iranian news agency IRIB said the islands of Qeshm and Abadan, both important to the oil sector, were among the sites hit.
Jordan’s armed forces said its air-defence systems intercepted five Iranian missiles aimed at its territory on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Egyptian government attributed a fire at a port to a drone attack, marking the first reported incident against the U.S. ally in the conflict.
The latest hostilities follow a week in which joint U.S.–Saudi strikes hit Iranian-linked logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq, and Iran’s IRGC claimed to have targeted a U.S. air base in Jordan and three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump, speaking at the White House, said the United States would "hit them very hard" in retaliation for the Jordan attack. The White House has not commented on the specific details of the recent strikes.
