AMC CEO backs Paramount-Warner Bros merger, criticizes state antitrust challenges

Summary

AMC chief Adam Aron expressed strong support for the proposed $110 billion Paramount/Warner Bros combination and urged state attorneys general to refrain from intervening.

AMC Networks chief executive Adam Aron said the company welcomes the planned merger of Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, describing it as a boost for theatrical releases. He urged state attorneys general who have raised antitrust concerns to step aside, arguing that the combined studio’s commitment to release at least 30 films a year and to keep movies out of video-on-demand for a minimum of 45 days would benefit exhibitors.

Aron referenced AMC’s recent advertising featuring Nicole Kidman, calling the campaign “the best one-liner synopsis AMC has ever had.” He also highlighted classic titles such as Rocky and The Shawshank Redemption to illustrate the potential for “underdog” theater revival after pandemic closures.

"We are a full-throated supporter of the deal," Aron said, adding that the merger would help ensure a steady flow of new releases for AMC’s theaters.

Analysts have questioned whether the merged studio can sustain the promised output, but Aron maintained that AMC’s size gives it negotiating leverage regardless of the number of studios involved. He indicated that competition from streaming platforms is less of a concern if the merger delivers a robust theatrical slate.

The proposed transaction, valued at roughly $110 billion, remains under review by several state regulators, who have expressed worries about market concentration in the film industry.
