George and Amal Clooney evacuate home in southern France amid expanding wildfires

Summary

The actors left their Brignodes residence as wildfires spread across the region, sending a letter to the mayor expressing concern for the community.

George and Amal Clooney evacuated their home in Brignodes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, after a wildfire threatened the area, a spokesperson confirmed to People magazine. The couple sent a letter to Mayor Didier Brémond stating they hoped the town and its residents remained safe and affirming their commitment to the community.

"As we evacuate Brignodes we want to emphasise two things: first, we hope you and the people of our city are safe, and second, that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and will help rebuild it," the letter read.

The evacuation coincides with a larger fire roughly four times the size of Paris burning in southwestern France, prompting the evacuation of about 3,000 people in the Brignodes vicinity. Across southern Europe, wildfires have forced more than 300,000 evacuations in France and Spain, and three firefighters have died in Greece while battling the blazes.

French authorities reported temperatures near 104 °F in the Gironde region, where the country's largest recent wildfire displaced roughly 220,000 residents and tourists at its peak. While many have returned, tens of thousands remain displaced.

The Clooneys have previously said they chose to raise their children on a farm in France to provide a quieter upbringing away from Hollywood, citing concerns about media attention and lifestyle pressures.
