Senate Committee Hearing on COVID-19 Origins Ends with Fauci Invoking Fifth Amendment

During a three-hour Republican-led Senate hearing, former health official Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly declined to answer questions, citing Fifth Amendment protection, as lawmakers debated the pandemic’s origins and his role.

Former U.S. public health chief Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right more than 100 times during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on the origins of COVID-19 and the federal response to the pandemic. Republican Senator Rand Paul, who chaired the session, questioned whether U.S.-funded research in China contributed to the outbreak and accused Fauci of misleading Congress.

Fauci, 85, declined to answer on the advice of his attorneys, stating that his testimony could expose him to new legal risks. He argued that the committee’s line of questioning was aimed at building a criminal case rather than conducting oversight.

The hearing, which lasted about three hours, included a vote to consider holding Fauci in contempt of Congress for his refusal to answer. Paul indicated that the committee would decide next week whether to pursue contempt proceedings, which could lead to civil or criminal action.

Democratic senators described the hearing as politically motivated, while Paul asserted that the investigation was necessary to determine accountability. The discussion also touched on scientific consensus that the virus most likely originated through natural zoonotic spillover, though intelligence agencies remain divided on the possibility of a laboratory-related incident.

Fauci’s 2025 presidential pardon covers alleged offenses prior to its issuance but does not shield him from potential liability for statements made after that date, a point highlighted by Republican members as a basis for the Fifth Amendment claim.
