Tony Romo cited for open container after Wisconsin DUI stop

Summary

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo received an open-container citation and three other citations following a July 23 traffic stop in Milwaukee, where he was detained on suspicion of operating while under the influence.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was issued a citation for possessing an open container in a moving vehicle after a traffic stop near Milwaukee’s Marquette Interchange on July 23. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said Romo was also cited for operating while under the influence and unsafe passing. Body-camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows a deputy stopping Romo, noting lane deviation and “unsafe passing,” and later conducting field-sobriety tests after observing an odor of alcohol and other indicators.

During the stop, Romo told the deputy he was returning from a golf course and repeatedly requested to speak with his lawyer. He declined a preliminary breath test and a blood draw, citing legal advice. After completing brief sobriety exercises, the deputy placed Romo under arrest for operating while under the influence and detained him at the county jail before releasing him later that evening.

Romo has not been formally charged and is scheduled to appear in court on September 21. The citations were obtained through a public-records request. ABC News sought comment from CBS and a Romo representative but did not receive a response.
