Seattle Storm apologizes after co-owner allegedly insults fans supporting Sophie Cunningham

Summary

The WNBA franchise said a minority owner made profane remarks toward two spectators holding a sign for Sophie Cunningham, and issued an apology emphasizing its commitment to an inclusive environment.

The Seattle Storm said a co-owner directed profane language at two women who were seated courtside during Tuesday night’s game against the Indiana Fever. The fans were holding a sign thanking guard Sophie Cunningham for “speaking up for girls” after Cunningham’s comments on transgender participation in women’s sports.

Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder told Front Office Sports, “We are aware one of our co-owners made comments to two fans in attendance at last night’s game. We apologize that this happened. Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect.”

The women reported that a woman told them they were “effing insane,” and the host of the Undivided broadcast, Brandi Kruse, identified the individual as Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton. The NBA and WNBA declined to comment at the time of reporting.

Cunningham, who recently discussed her views on protecting women’s sports, said she receives criticism for being perceived as anti-trans, but maintains her stance is rooted in concern for young female athletes.
