FIFA launches disciplinary investigation into Argentine players and staff after World Cup final

Summary

FIFA has opened formal proceedings to examine alleged assaults and unsporting conduct by Argentine players and an assistant coach following their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.

FIFA announced that it has initiated disciplinary proceedings concerning the conduct of Argentina’s national team after their 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final held at the New York-New Jersey Stadium. The governing body appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review incidents that occurred after the final whistle, which involved several Argentine players and staff in confrontations with Spanish players.

Based on the prosecutor’s recommendation, FIFA will investigate defender Nahuel Molina on two counts, midfielder Leandro Paredes on three counts, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala on one count for alleged assault under article 14 of the FIFA disciplinary code. Molina may also face a charge of unsporting behaviour, while teammate Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are cited for the same breach.

Under FIFA’s code, unsporting conduct carries a minimum one-match suspension, whereas assault offenses can result in a suspension of at least three matches.
