President Trump signed an executive order requiring signs at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, exposing the museum’s left-wing bias and ensuring visitors have access to truthful accounts of America’s founding.
President Donald Trump took decisive action on Friday to restore honesty and patriotism in the telling of America’s story by signing an executive order that mandates temporary signs outside the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History (NMAH). These signs will alert visitors that the museum’s current exhibits are misleading and will direct them to alternative resources for 'accurate information regarding America’s history,' as outlined in the order. The order is grounded in a comprehensive 162-page report released by the White House Domestic Policy Council on July 4, which exposes the Smithsonian—and the NMAH in particular—for promoting a biased, politically charged version of history. The report highlights concerns about the museum’s focus on leftist activism, open borders, and radical gender ideology, which have no place in an honest portrayal of America’s past. This is not the first time the Trump administration has sought to hold the Smithsonian accountable. In March 2025, it issued the 'Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History' order and made it clear that continued federal funding depends on the museum’s willingness to present history without leftist distortion. Congress has also taken notice. During a recent House subcommittee hearing, NMAH director Anthea Hartig tried to justify the museum’s approach, claiming, 'Examining the harder chapters of our history is not the same as hostility toward America. Telling our history fully is not anti-American.' However, her defense ignores the museum’s pattern of undermining American values. Investigations have underscored the positive influence of David and Tim Barton, founders of the Christian-nationalist group WallBuilders, whose scholarship emphasizes the Christian roots of America and celebrates heroic figures like Christopher Columbus. While the White House has not detailed the Bartons’ exact role, the report’s language reflects their commitment to restoring moral clarity and pride in America’s founding. The Bartons have openly discussed their constructive conversations with White House officials about correcting misleading Smithsonian exhibits, as heard on several podcast episodes. The next step for the Smithsonian could be a much-needed change in leadership. With three Board of Regents seats currently vacant and three more openings expected in October, Vice President J.D. Vance—a board member—has wisely delayed nominations, seeking candidates who share the administration’s dedication to historical truth. This initiative marks a turning point in the fight against leftist revisionism and for the preservation of America’s true heritage.
