Vikings evaluate Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy as starting quarterback during training camp
Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell and general manager Nolan Teasley will decide which quarterback—Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy—will start for Week 1 as training camp progresses, with both players receiving reps in early practices.
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings entered the first day of training camp with both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy slated to take snaps for the first- and second-team offenses. Coach Kevin O’Connell said the competition is intended to reveal which quarterback can best execute the team’s rhythm- and timing-based system, noting that “having gone through training camps at that position, I’m well aware of the time it takes to go into Week 1 comfortable and ready to get off to a really good start.”
Early sessions will feature an even split of repetitions between the two players, but the balance will shift as practices move toward more realistic game simulations. The Vikings have scheduled joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens beginning Aug. 19, a point O’Connell described as a “pivotal” benchmark for evaluating the quarterbacks.
General manager Nolan Teasley said he looks forward to seeing Murray in the offense, adding, “He was the No. 1 pick for a reason… it’s not just about what he can do with his arm, and we all know he can operate on schedule.” No timeline for naming a starter was provided, and both O’Connell and Teasley declined to indicate a preferred candidate.
The coaching staff also highlighted the need for improvements on the offensive line and in the running game, citing that Vikings quarterbacks have taken the most hits of any team since 2022. O’Connell indicated the camp will be more physically demanding to help address those issues.
The decision on the starting quarterback will be made before the regular season begins, with the organization emphasizing that the choice is only one component of a broader effort to enhance the team’s overall performance.
