Australian Woman Convicted of Mushroom Murders Faces Sentencing Amid New Allegations

Summary

Erin Patterson, convicted of murdering three relatives with a mushroom-laced meal, faces sentencing as new allegations emerge about prior poisoning attempts on her estranged husband.

Erin Patterson, a 50-year-old Australian woman, was convicted last month of murdering her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, by serving them a beef Wellington meal laced with deadly death cap mushrooms at her home in Leongatha, Victoria, in July 2023. Heather's husband, Ian Wilkinson, also consumed the meal but survived after a prolonged hospitalization.

Newly disclosed pretrial evidence reveals that Patterson's estranged husband, Simon Patterson, suspected she had been poisoning him more than a year before the fatal meal. Simon testified that he declined a lunch invitation from Erin out of fear, stating, "I thought there'd be a risk that she'd poison me if I attended." He recounted becoming seriously ill after consuming meals she prepared, including penne bolognese, chicken korma curry, and a vegetable curry wrap during family camping trips between November 2021 and September 2022. Although no poisons were found, and charges related to these allegations were dropped before the trial, this evidence has now been made public following a judge's decision to lift a gag order.

Patterson's sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 25, 2025, where she faces potential life sentences for each of the three murders and 25 years for the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson. Prosecutor Jane Warren indicated that numerous victim impact statements would be presented during the two-day hearing. Following sentencing, Patterson will have 28 days to appeal her convictions or the sentence.
