Evan Rachel Wood says she was not asked to return for Practical Magic sequel

Summary

Evan Rachel Wood confirmed she was not invited to reprise her role in the upcoming Practical Magic sequel, which will feature new actors in several original parts.

Evan Rachel Wood said she was not asked to return for the sequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic, which is scheduled for release on Sept. 11. Wood, who played Kylie Owens, told Entertainment Tonight that the new adaptation appears to diverge from the source material and that she had offered to appear in a small capacity, but the producers chose to recast the role.

"I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel. I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line," Wood said in an Instagram story. She added that she was disappointed that the original cast would not be reunited for the follow-up, noting the bond fans formed with the characters as children. Wood expressed goodwill toward actress Joey King, who has been cast as Kylie, and wished the production success. Other original cast members also will not appear: Alexandra Artrip, who played Antonia Owens, is being replaced by Maisie Williams, and Aidan Quinn, who portrayed Gary Hallet, is not returning. The sequel is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic and is directed by Susanne Bier.
