Ari Emanuel backs Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger in Wall Street Journal op-ed
Talent agency head Ari Emanuel defended the $111 billion Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, criticizing antitrust lawsuits and urging regulators to drop the case.
Talent agency executive Ari Emanuel wrote an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal supporting the proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery. He said state attorneys general pursuing antitrust action are misled by a "poisoned political environment" and should focus on enforcing existing laws.
"When government officials manipulate markets to reach political outcomes, antitrust stops protecting competition and starts threatening it," Emanuel wrote. > "The attorneys general should drop this case and get back to enforcing the laws as they are written. Let Hollywood creatives get back to trying to rip each other’s heads off at the box office, in streaming, online and everywhere else we compete."
Emanuel, who runs talent agency WME and the sports-entertainment firm TKO that owns UFC, highlighted his industry ties, noting UFC’s $7.7 billion content deal with Paramount last year. He argued the antitrust suit ignores competition from platforms such as Amazon and Netflix and fails to reflect the broader market reality.
He warned that if the merger is blocked, Warner Bros. Discovery could struggle with its debt load and declining revenue, while Paramount might continue operating at a reduced scale. The merger remains contentious; an open letter signed by many industry figures, including WME clients, opposes it, and the Writers Guild of America has filed a separate antitrust suit. Nevertheless, some executives, such as director James Cameron and AMC Networks chief Adam Aron, have voiced support.
