Grenada police say missing North Carolina visitor was seen swimming before disappearance

Summary

Cayman-based authorities released details that 44-year-old Elizabeth Waddell was captured on surveillance entering the sea and later swimming beneath a jetty before vanishing, prompting a missing-person search.

Royal Grenada Police Force officials said 44-year-old Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, a physical therapist from Cary, North Carolina, disappeared on July 22 while staying with a friend in the Grand Anse area of St. George’s. Surveillance footage reviewed by police showed Waddell entering the water at about 11:51 a.m. and, 13 minutes later, swimming beneath a jetty.

“Ms Waddell was not seen on surveillance footage returning from the water,” Police Commissioner Randy Connaught told reporters. “Investigators have also received several eyewitness accounts indicating that she was swimming in the open water.” The video will not be released publicly at this stage, though officials said it could be made available if deemed necessary. Waddell’s companion was recorded walking toward the jetty at 12:46 p.m. and later returning alone. The friend reported Waddell missing to South St. George police at 5:50 p.m., prompting an immediate response and a search that includes appeals to local fishermen, boat operators and residents along the southern coastline. “We appeal to anyone who may have information, relevant to this investigation, to come forward, and contact the Royal Grenada Police Force,” Connaught added. Police are cooperating with the FBI regional office on the video review. Waddell’s husband arrived on the island on Friday and has been described as cooperative. The family includes an adopted adult daughter. Waddell, who holds a doctorate in physical therapy from UNC Chapel Hill and runs a clinic in Cary, was noted for an active lifestyle that included pole dancing, CrossFit and hiking.
