Kentucky Governor Urges Sen. McConnell to Show Ability to Serve or Resign

Resumen

Governor Andy Beshear asked Senator Mitch McConnell to provide evidence of his capacity to fulfill Senate duties, warning that his continued absence could affect the GOP's narrow majority.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear publicly asked Senator Mitch McConnell to demonstrate that he remains able to serve or to step down, citing the senator's ongoing absence from the Senate. Beshear said the request could be met with a brief video or a phone call to a state media outlet, and he urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to look into McConnell's condition if no proof is offered.

McConnell's office confirmed the 84-year-old lawmaker has not yet been cleared by doctors to leave rehabilitation and declined to comment on the governor's demand. The senator has released a still photograph with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, but Beshear said the image does not address whether McConnell can perform his legislative duties.

Republicans currently hold a slim Senate majority, and McConnell's absence reduces their voting strength. Kentucky law passed in 2024 requires a special election to fill a Senate vacancy and bars the Democratic governor from appointing an interim senator, though the state constitution may allow the governor to name a temporary replacement. Legal scholars note the new law could be challenged.

McConnell was hospitalized after a June 14 fall that caused a brief loss of consciousness and later a mild case of pneumonia. He is undergoing intensive physical therapy, but officials have not provided details on his ability to speak, reason, or carry out senatorial responsibilities.
