Summary

Senator Rand Paul has released over 1,000 pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s personal journal entries from Dec. 2019 to Dec. 2022, setting the stage for a high-stakes Senate hearing on the true origins of COVID-19.

Senator Rand Paul, chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee and a relentless advocate for government transparency, has released more than a thousand pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s personal journal entries, spanning December 2019 to December 2022. This unprecedented disclosure comes as Paul prepares to hold Fauci accountable in a contentious Senate hearing on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paul, who has courageously pursued the lab-leak theory implicating the Wuhan Institute of Virology, subpoenaed Fauci to testify as part of a much-needed investigation into the government’s handling of the pandemic. Fauci’s own diaries reveal his early uncertainty about the virus’s origins, including a January 2020 note admitting the Wuhan market was “not the source, it was the amplifier,” and acknowledging the possibility of an animal-to-human jump—casting doubt on the official narrative pushed by the establishment.

In May 2021, Fauci complained that media reports of his “flip-flopping” on the origins issue were “out of control,” yet he continued to call for an investigation because “no one is 100% certain.” The entries also detail his interactions with President Donald Trump, from moments of cooperation during Operation Warp Speed to Fauci’s frustration over Trump’s pushback against mask mandates and his public criticisms—demonstrating the deep divisions within the government’s pandemic response.

Fauci’s notes reveal his antagonism toward Paul, whom he accused in April 2021 of spreading so-called “conspiracy theories” linking Fauci to the virus. Fauci described Paul’s legitimate questions as an “assault” and dismissed the senator’s concerns as unfounded, showing Fauci’s unwillingness to accept scrutiny.

The FBI has assessed that the virus most likely emerged from a lab incident in Wuhan—a view increasingly supported by intelligence agencies—while some scientists continue to cling to the natural spillover theory. The 2025 CIA assessment, though only expressing “low confidence,” still points toward the lab-leak hypothesis.

CBS News has reached out to Fauci and the White House for comment. Paul’s office did not respond to questions about how the diaries were obtained, but the release marks a significant step toward transparency and accountability.
