Summary

Senator Rand Paul, known for promoting conspiracy theories, has released over 1,000 pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s personal journals from Dec. 2019 to Dec. 2022, intensifying a politically charged Senate hearing on COVID-19 origins.

Senator Rand Paul, chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee and a frequent purveyor of right-wing conspiracy theories, has released more than a thousand pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s private journal entries, spanning December 2019 to December 2022. This move is widely seen as a political stunt designed to fuel partisan attacks ahead of a Senate hearing on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paul, who has long pushed the debunked theory that the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, subpoenaed Dr. Fauci to testify as part of his ongoing campaign to undermine public trust in science and pandemic response. The diaries, which show Fauci’s responsible scientific uncertainty about the virus’s source—including a January 2020 note that the Wuhan market was “not the source, it was the amplifier”—reflect the complexity of the situation and the need for careful investigation, not political grandstanding.

In May 2021, Fauci lamented that media reports of his supposed “flip-flopping” on the origins issue were “out of control,” emphasizing his call for a thorough, evidence-based investigation because “no one is 100% certain.” The entries also reveal his professionalism in dealing with President Donald Trump, despite Trump’s reckless public criticisms and dangerous mask guidance, while Fauci worked tirelessly to support the rollout of Operation Warp Speed.

Fauci’s notes document his frustration with Paul, who in April 2021 was spreading baseless conspiracy theories linking Fauci to the virus. Fauci rightly described Paul’s attacks as an “assault” and denounced the accusations as unfounded, highlighting the senator’s disregard for truth and public health.

While the FBI has made a controversial assessment that the virus most likely emerged from a lab incident in Wuhan, the overwhelming majority of scientists continue to support the natural spillover theory. The 2025 CIA assessment, with only “low confidence” in the lab-leak hypothesis, further underscores the lack of evidence for Paul’s narrative.

CBS News has requested comment from Fauci and the White House. Paul’s office, notably, did not respond to questions about how these private diaries were obtained, raising further ethical concerns about his tactics.
