Grand Haven family of eight found dead after father allegedly shot them and set house on fire

Summary

Police say 47-year-old Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife and six children before igniting their Grand Haven home and then taking his own life.

Grand Haven, Michigan – Authorities say Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot his wife, Amanda, 39, and their six children, ages 5 to 15, before setting their residence ablaze and committing suicide. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks told a news conference that first responders discovered the bodies in separate bedrooms after neighbors reported a fire late Friday morning. Autopsies confirmed that all victims had been shot.

Sparks described the incident as a murder-suicide, noting that the fire was started after the killings and appeared to have been ignited in multiple locations inside the home. He added that the violence may have begun the night before, citing earlier reports of smoke in the area.

Four of the children were the couple’s biological offspring, while two 11-year-old girls had been adopted; their identities have not been released. The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit and a state police dog assisted the sheriff’s office, though officials have not confirmed whether the firearm used was recovered.

Amanda Karolkiewicz was a substitute teacher, children’s book author, and advocate for special-needs children. Her parents described her as a devoted mother and educator.
