49ers coach Kyle Shanahan recovered from serious car crash, friend says
Former quarterback Chris Simms revealed that Shanahan narrowly avoided losing an eye in a recent collision and is still dealing with concussion symptoms as camp proceeds.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan attended practice for a second day despite lingering concussion symptoms from a car accident that also left him with a broken nose, a broken left hand and broken ribs. Former NFL quarterback and NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms said Shanahan was "this close to maybe losing his right eye" after the crash, describing the wide-open cuts on his forehead.
Simms added that Shanahan was driving from a chiropractic appointment when the collision occurred with a woman driver. He said the incident caused considerable emotional distress for Shanahan and his family, noting that the coach was "very concerned about the woman he got in the accident with" and that their children were in shock.
The coach’s appearances come as the 49ers begin training camp, with several players also sidelined by injuries, including Vederian Lowe (high-ankle sprain), wide receiver Christian Kirk (calf strain), rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton (bone bruise) and defensive lineman Andrew Farmer II (back issue). Rookie defensive end Romello Height was carted off late in practice with a leg cramp. Defensive ends Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams continue rehab from ACL tears, while other defensive tackle candidates Osa Odighizuwa and CJ West are expected to compete for starting roles.
