Son arrested after shooting of Kansas City Chiefs coach's wife in Virginia
Police say 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy was arrested and charged in the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, in Ashburn, Virginia. The victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police responded to a shooting at a townhouse in the One Loudoun area of Ashburn, Virginia, around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was found with two gunshot wounds to the upper body and was taken to a hospital for surgery; a fragment of a projectile remains lodged in her body.
Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the couple’s son who also lives in the home, and are holding him without bond on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public and the investigation continues.
Neighbors described the Bieniemy family as a “good Christian family” and said they had appeared to get along. One neighbor’s ring-camera footage showed police carrying a person from the scene.
The Chiefs confirmed they are aware of the incident. Vice President of Football Communications Brad Gee said the club will not comment further out of respect for the family’s privacy, and head coach Andy Reid said Mia Bieniemy is stable and expressed support for Eric Bieniemy.
