Opening statements heard in trial of Massachusetts mother accused of killing three children
Prosecutors say Lindsay Clancy planned the murders, while her defense claims she suffered postpartum psychosis at the time.
A jury in Duxbury, Massachusetts, began hearing opening statements on Monday in the case of Lindsay Clancy, who is charged with the 2023 deaths of her three children. Prosecutors contend that the former labor-and-delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital deliberately orchestrated the killings and bears full responsibility. Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, argues that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis—a rare condition associated with the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes after childbirth—when the deaths occurred. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
"The evidence will show that Ms. Clancy planned and executed these murders," the prosecutor said.
"My client was suffering from a severe mental illness that impaired her judgment at the time of the incident," Reddington added.
