Pentagon adds new casualty category amid questions over Iran conflict figures

Resumen

The Defense Department created a new “Overseas Operations” category in its casualty database, raising questions about the total number of U.S. service members killed or wounded in recent strikes linked to the Iran conflict.

The Pentagon has added a new “Overseas Operations” category to its war casualty database, listing four service members killed and 207 wounded under that heading. The change follows the removal of four soldiers’ names and dozens of wounded troops from the original “Operation Epic Fury” tally, which recorded 14 deaths and 417 injuries. When the two sets of figures are combined, the total appears to be 18 deaths and 624 wounded, although it is not yet clear whether all individuals in the new category were casualties of the Iran-related strikes.

CNN reported that the updated numbers include an additional 140 wounded service members not previously reported. The White House and the Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell and acting Pentagon Press Secretary Joel Valdez previously attributed the earlier removal to “temporary data disruptions” and said the issue would be resolved.

President Donald Trump has publicly acknowledged 18 deaths in the conflict, citing remarks to reporters and a post on his social media platform. The July 7 date used for the new category aligns with a War Powers notification to Congress in which Trump asserted that a new phase of the conflict began on that day, following a brief ceasefire.

The four service members killed in the recent Iranian strikes were identified as 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii; Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of New York; Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas; and Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of North Carolina.
